Bride dies 18 hours after her wedding | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 02:57 AM PST

A Connecticut woman married the love of her life from her hospital bed on Dec. 22, two years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bridesmaid Christina Karas captured the triumph and joy moments after Heather Lindsay, 31, and David Mosher said their "I do's."

The image of Lindsay throwing her arms up has since gone viral.

"She's getting to shout from the rooftops that she loves Dave and is able to say, 'I'm his wife,'" Karas told TV station WFSB.
"It reminds me of someone who is crossing the finish line of a marathon or something," Mosher, 35, said of the photo.
Lindsay succumbed to her illness hours after she tied the knot at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

The couple met at a dance class in 2015, and within a year Mosher was ready to propose.

He did just that, complete with a horse-drawn carriage, after Lindsay was diagnosed with cancer Dec. 23, 2015.
Over the next year, Karas helped Lindsay plan the wedding of her dreams.
"She was so hopeful," Karas told NBC. "The way we would talk about it, you always kind of felt this isn't it."
They pushed up the wedding originally scheduled for Dec. 30 and intended to just lay the wedding dress across Lindsay, whom they feared was too weak to put it on. But she made it into her gown and to the hospital's chapel, where she exchanged vows with Mosher.

"That moment right there was like, 'Death, I'm not afraid of you! I am so in love and I am going to celebrate that love right now,'" Karas recalled.

Lindsay was buried Saturday, the day that was meant to be her wedding day.

What The New Year Brings

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:29 AM PST

The new year comes bearing gifts.

For some, it is the gift of relief - relief that the last year is over. For others, a new year brings hope - hope for the future and for a better year than the last. A new year can also bring anticipation for what's ahead. Perhaps there's a new adventure to look forward to.

Or maybe we have goals for this year and look ahead to their completion.

Often, when we consider our expectations for the new year, we tend to plan for and look forward to good things. We anticipate fun activities, new experiences, and increased blessings. We set goals and make plans to attain the things and experiences we've long desired. We resolve to make things better and improve ourselves and our lives.

Sometimes though, like the ugly sweater or new appliance we never wanted, the new year brings gifts that aren't desired. Fear. Uncertainty. Dread. Just the thought of the unknown future can bring worry or paralyzing fear. If that last year was especially hard, we may dread the thought of another difficult year. Or maybe we do know what to expect in 2018. Maybe we have a dreaded medical test or procedure scheduled. Or we are certain a relationship we've tried so hard to keep together will finally fall apart. Or that bill will finally come due and we know we have no way to pay it.

When I consider my own thoughts about this new year, part of me accepts the gift of sweet anticipation and looks forward to the experiences that lie ahead. Yet another part of me trembles a bit with fear at the unknown. The truth is, I know that life is filled with hardship and challenges. I don't expect 2018 to be easy and carefree. And maybe that's why there's fear, because I know some challenge, obstacle, or hardship likely lie ahead.

But what if this year you and I embrace all that the new year brings? What if we looked forward to everything God wants to do in and through us in 2018?

Even if it's hard?
And even if the story He's written for us this year involves more challenges, obstacles, and trials?
James tells us to "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds." (1:2) As we look ahead into 2018, anticipating what God has planned for us, we need to face that future with joy. Not because trials are fun. Not because we want additional heartache in our life. Rather, we rejoice in what those trials produce in us, "the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" (James 1:3,4).

We find joy in knowing what trials produce in us. God uses challenges and hardships to make us more and more like Christ. And what did our Savior's life look like? One of suffering. Paul wrote, "I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead." (Philippians 4:10-11, NIV). Paul was willing to do whatever it took, even enduring trials, to become like Christ. May that be our goal as well for this year, to pursue Christ and become like him, no matter what it takes.

We face the new year with joy also because we know who rules and reigns over our trials. We can trust that each and every obstacle, whatever trial we endure, and any heartache we face, are all given to us by God for our good. He doesn't use challenges or trials in a willy-nilly way, with no purpose or meaning. He doesn't even do so out of anger and punishment. Rather, he uses trials for our discipline and training. They are used to strip away the remaining sin in us and shape us into the image of Christ. Such trials show us our need for God and his grace. They teach us humility and dependence. They are opportunities for us to grow in faith. They also show to a watching world the power of God in weakness, bringing him honor and glory.

Challenges and trials come to us from a good and righteous Father who only does what is good and right. We can trust his purposes and plans for us because he is holy and just. He knows exactly what we need to teach and train us in the way of righteousness. He knows just what we need to be made holy.

After all, we are his children, adopted through the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf. We are his beloved—loved by God as much as he loves the Son. He is gracious to us and no matter what the future holds, we are not left alone in it. He is with us, giving us peace in anxiety, strength in the face of suffering, and grace to endure. He also gives us brothers and sisters to walk with us: encouraging us when we stumble, helping us when we fall, and remaining with us to the finish line.

As we open this gift of a new year, may we accept it with hope and joy, rather than fear and despair. Because we know the sender of all gifts. And since he gave us the greatest gift of all — life through his Son — how can we not trust him with the gift of a new year?

Why I named my pet snake Toke Makinwa -Pretty Mike | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:07 AM PST

Popular Lagos club owner, Pretty Mike, has explained why he named his pet snake  Toke Makinwa.

In chat with Saturday Beats, the controversial socialite said,
"I named my pet snake Toke Makinwa because every Toke Makinwa is a snake. I named my pet python Toke Makinwa because I believe that she is not just a snake, but a huge snake – a python. And this is based on some things she talks about and writes on. There is a lot of cunningness and sneakiness to her.
"She is not your normal lady and it is time to let people know. Some people attacked me that why would I name my snake after her but the truth is that the name is patented and she does not have the right to the name. She is not the only Toke Makinwa in the world; there are so many of them. She might be the more popular one but right now, my pet python is even more popular than her.

"The truth is that we did not have any issue before I named the snake Toke Makinwa. She is my very good friend and I have seen her on some occasions. She understands that this is pure entertainment and as entertainers, we could diss ourselves in public but because we are entertainers, we know that when we are behind closed doors, we would talk to each other and settle any issue.

"We would see ourselves and say something like, 'Mike that was a nice one.' That is the beauty of the maturity entertainers have. We can do whatever we like in public, but behind closed doors, we know it is just for the show. I met her once after the news broke that I named my python Toke Makinwa and the reception I got from her was nice.
She just said, 'Hey Mike, you want them to hear our voice in Lagos State.' And I told her that it is what we are in the business for. I even plan to have a 'meet, greet and take a picture with Toke' I would take my python out and people would have the opportunity of taking a picture with her

Prof. Soyinka attacks Buhari over fuel scarcity | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:07 AM PST

Professor Wole Soyinka has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to end the current fuel scarcity in the country rather than buying time and passing blame.

The playwright said this in a statement he entitled, "Blame passing: The New Year Gift to a Nation,''

Soyinka said,
"I recently ran the gauntlet of petroleum queues through three conveniently situated cities – Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan – deliberately, this Friday. Even with 'unorthodox' aids of passage, this was no task for the faint-hearted."Just getting past fueling stations was traumatising, an obstacle race through seething, frustrated masses of humanity, only to find ourselves on vast stretches of emptied roads pleading for occupation. As for obtaining the petroleum in the first place – the less said the better.
"I suspect that this government has permitted itself to be fooled by the peace of those empty streets, but also by the orderly, patient, long-suffering queues that are admittedly prevalent in the city centres.
"It is time the reporting monitors of government moved to city peripheries and sometimes even some other inner urban sectors, such as Ikeja and Maryland from time to time to see, and listen!
"Pronouncements – such as the 1977 above – again re-echoing by rote in 2017– are a delusion at best, a formula that derides public intelligence. Buying time. Passing blame.
Yes, of course, the current affliction must be remedied, and fast, but is there a dimension to it that must be brought to the fore, simultaneously and forcefully? This had better be the framework for solving even a shortage that virtually paralysed the nation."

He added, "It is however a masterful end-of-year image to take into the coming year, not only for the individual now at the helm of government, General Buhari, but for a people surely credited with the most astounding degree of patience and forbearance on the African continent – except of course among themselves, when they turn into predatory fiends.
"When many of us are blissfully departed, an updated rendition of this same clipping – with a change of cast here and there – will undoubtedly be reproduced in the media, with the same alibis, the same in-built panacea of blame passing."."
 Soyinka added,

"As the tussle for the next round of power gets hotter in the coming year, the electorate will again be manipulated into losing sight of the base issue… Sooner than later, but not as soon as pledged, the fuel crisis will pass. And then, of course, we shall await the next round of shortages, then a recommencement of blame passing.
"What will be the commodity this time – food perhaps? Maybe even potable water? In a nation of plenty, nothing is beyond eventual shortage – except, of course, the commonplace endowment of pre-emptive planning and methodical execution."

Georgina Onuoha shares testimony after major health scare | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:12 PM PST

Nollywood actress ,Georgina Onuoha has revealed she had a major health scare in September ..She wrote

While the whole world celebrated my birthday on September 29, little did they know they were praying and wishing me well. Only few noticed I did not post any celebratory pictures.
With all the beautiful pictures that many cherished, loved and saved, little did they know I was lying down in the Emergency Room receiving blood transfusion, tons of Intravenous fluids.

My life has always been a life of testimony. I didn't know what was wrong, I was extremely fatigued. I take little walks ; I'm panting like someone who just finished a marathon. I climb the staircase, I feel like passing out.. I couldn't even enjoy a beautiful beach walk with my love. I struggle with sleep, my brain can't shutdown for the night. Things were not right. I called my primary care physician and went in for a checkup. I was sent to do Series of lab. Which I did and went home. Two days later, I was all fine and driving home and suddenly, I got that call. " Gina she said!

Where are you? I replied, I'm driving home. She said park your car and submit yourself to the ER. I said why? She said you could pass out any moment, your red blood count is extremely low, which means you are not getting enough oxygen circulation to your brain and heart. I was with my friend Kim. She took me to the ER, I was treated for exhaustion, low hemoglobin and Severe Anemia.

Tons of labs were done to figure out why I lost so much blood and survived that long with a hemoglobin count of 6. The rest is history. I was told by my doctor, Gina please rest, you need tons of sleep, and take it easy with studying.

At every close encounter with my life God has and will continue to keep, watch and preserve my life. Who are mine lord that you are so mindful of me? My lips will always praise and bless you my creator in whom I trust. Those who put their faith in God will never be disappointed. Thanks GG for always being there for me. Thanks @mskimberlyla for all the love and support. Thanks @naomiraheem I'm so glad to have you as a sister.. Thanks all for all the birthday prayers in September.. they made miracles happen in my life. For that I'm grateful 🙏🏻.
I will end this year giving testimony. Watch this space ❤️️🙏🏻

Ten modular refineries reach advanced stage – VP Osinbajo

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:34 PM PST

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is committed to promoting the establishment of privately financed modular refineries in the country.

This, he said, will increase local refining capacity, create jobs, ensure peace and stability in the Niger delta region.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Laolu Akande, said that the initiative which featured prominently in recent talks between the Federal Government and the oil-producing areas, as represented by PANDEF, will also reposition the petroleum industry and ensure self-sufficiency of petroleum products, while serving as a disincentive for illegal refineries and oil pollution.

According to the statement released on Saturday, he said "At an end-of-the-year review meeting of the Niger Delta Inter-Ministerial Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, before the holidays, Prof. Osinbajo noted that the Federal Government, in line with its Niger Delta New Vision, is targeting measurable objectives in its efforts towards implementing development projects in the region.

Man found inocent after spending 2 years in jail for rapw | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:17 PM PST

Danny Kay, 26, of Derby, who spent more than two years in jail for a rape he did not commit, had his conviction quashed after a relative uncovered a series of bombshell Facebook messages - missed by police - that proved his innocence.

In the latest rape case to highlight failings in the criminal justice system, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that the jury at Danny Kay's 2013 trial was only shown doctored transcripts of crucial Facebook chats between Mr Kay and his accuser.

In an exclusive interview with the MoS, Mr Kay said archived versions of the original messages - proving he had consensual sex with his accuser - were found by his sister-in-law, Sarah Maddison .

When she showed the Facebook exchange to the officer in charge of the investigation, he said: 'How did you know how to find the messages and we didn't?'

The Appeal Court heard earlier this month that police relied on an 'edited and misleading' account of the Facebook conversation that was given to them by the complainant in the weeks after she claimed she was raped by Mr Kay.

Mr Kay, 26, said: 'Even now, with the conviction quashed, I still can't believe that it took years of pain and stress for this nightmare to end. And the terrifying thought is that if the police and justice system could fail me like this, it could happen to anyone.

Presidency Explains Inclusion of Dead Persons in Federal Boards

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:09 PM PST

The Presidency on Saturday explained why there were names of dead persons on the list of newly appointed chairmen and members of board of government parastatals and agencies.

The list was released on Friday by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The Senior Special Assistant to the on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu said that the list was prepared before President Muhammadu Buhari took ill and was subsequently released by the SGF, Boss Mustapha without any alteration.

According to him, the President requested for the submission of 50 names each by the state chapters of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2015 which were later complied by the National Secretariat of the party.

He also pointed out that the names were then submitted to the immediate past SGF, Babachir Lawal.

He said: "However, complaint arose from some governors who felt they were not carried along in the process. To answer this, the president constituted a committee under the vice president to review and reflect the interest of the governors."

He said that action on the report submitted to the President by the committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was delayed because of President Buhari's illness and his subsequent medical vacation abroad.

"The president's trips for medical attention slowed down completion of the process," he said.

According to him, the president only decided to revisit the matter recently and therefore directed the new SGF to release the list.

"The current SGF was only directed to complete that process by releasing the list which he apparently did without altering it," he stated.

He said that the appearance of dead persons names on the list was a mistake which would be corrected.

The President had approved the constitution of the Governing Boards of Agencies and Parastatals, under some Ministries, as well as the appointment of eminently qualified Nigerians to fill the Board positions.

It is made up of 209 Chairmen and 1,258 members.

According to a statement issued by SGF, in Abuja on Friday said the President considered the approval for the constitution of the Boards as well as the appointments as they were "very necessary, so as to provide a proper Governance and oversight structure for Government Agencies and Parastatals."

The statement added: "The constitution of the boards with the appointments, is a demonstration of this Government's efforts aimed at building strong institutions of Governance, and by extension, improving the quality of Policy formulation and supervision.

"While these appointments represent a substantial number of hitherto pending board appointments, some more appointments are still being processed and will be released in due course.

"The appointments take immediate effect and Honourable Ministers are advised to inaugurate the boards after letters of appointment have been issued."

Serena Williams suffers defeat on comeback | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:52 PM PST

New mum, Serena Williams on Saturday suffered defeat on her comeback from a maternity break as French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko powered to victory in the "first to ten points" final set at the Mubadala World Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The championship is an exhibition tournament.

The slow moving 36-year-old Williams looked static and far from full fitness just four months after the birth of her first child and Ostapenko, a 20-year-old Latvian, won 6-2, 3-6, 10/5.

"The first match is always really hard after a break," Williams said.

The 36-year-old American, winner of 23 grand slam single titles, was making a comeback after taking nearly 11 months off to have her first child.

Her last match was the Australian Open final, which she won despite being two-month pregnant.

"It was good to be back out there. I missed playing, I missed competition, I missed the crowd, the atmosphere so much. It was really nice to be back," said Williams after the match.
"I don't know if I am totally ready to come back on the Tour yet. I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships," she said, refusing to commit yet to the Australian Open, which starts in a little over two weeks.
"I don't know, but I am definitely looking forward to getting back out there.
"I am taking it one day at a time. I am going to assess everything with Patrick (Mouratoglou, her coach) and my team," she said.

It was the first time Ostapenko had played against Williams, whom she described as her "childhood idol".

Bus conductor sexually assaults 6-year in school premises | Mr Olumide's Blog

A six-year-old girl pupil in Vasant Vihar, India, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a conductor in a bus when it was parked inside the school premises.
The sad incident took place on December 12.

According to Hindustan Times, the conductor, who molested the girl in the presence of other pupils has been arrested.

The matter was revealed when some children informed a teacher and she raised an alarm.
In a statement to the police, the teacher concerned said on the day of the incident when she entered the bus, which was set to leave the school, she was approached by a bunch of children, including the victim, who studies in Class 1.

The children reportedly told the teacher that the conductor went to the girl's seat and touched her inappropriately besides trying to forcefully hug her.
"By the time the teacher learnt about the assault, the bus had started moving. Upon learning about the conductor's alleged act, she made the bus stop, which was still inside the school premises. Expect major improvement in power, rail, road - Presidency to Nigerians | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:17 AM PST

Nigerians have been told by the presidency to expect major facelift in power, rail and roads in 2018 based on the present administration's investment in infrastructure.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

"President Buhari's investment in infrastructure will see major facelifts across the country in power, rail and roads, which have been scheduled to come on stream in 2018," Adesina said.

Adesina said it was appropriate to, at the twilight of 2017 and at the threshold of a New Year, recount some key achievements of the administration in the outgoing year.

He said despite global economic challenges and initial outlook of slow, or unlikely, recovery, the Nigerian economy trumped predictions and witnessed some remarkable changes in 2017.

"In our review of the economy based on facts and figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, we are pleased to note that the economy has been on the path of steady growth since the second quarter, after contracting for five consecutive quarters.

"President Muhammadu Buhari is hopeful that the exit from recession, stabilisation of the naira and robust harvest in the agricultural sector will continue to impact on the livelihood of Nigerians," he said.

Adesina noted that multilateral institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have already projected higher growth for the economy in 2018.

He said the government was hopeful that the gains of 2017 in agriculture would be further improved.

He added, "The agricultural sector posted consistent growth levels throughout the recession, leading other sectors into positive growth rates.

"Accordingly, Nigeria saw bumper food harvests, especially in rice, whose local production continues to rise significantly with states like Ebonyi, Kebbi and Kano leading the pack, while Ogun joined the loop by the end of 2017.

"The price of a 50kg bag of rice – a staple in our country – has fallen by about 30 per cent since the beginning of 2017, as local production continues to rise. The price will keep falling, as production remains consistent and rises.

"The Food and Agriculture Organisation said the number of Nigerians facing food insecurity in the northeast dropped by half this year."
